The Book of Shadows ProloguePrologue
 
Lightning flashes once in the distance, illuminating burning towers and glinting off of weapons and armor. The thunder that echoes moments behind is nearly a relief as it covers the clashing of steel on steel, and the screams that follow. A young woman in a dark cloak darts through the empty streets closer to the towers, dodging overturned bins and carts, her lithe form moving with a trained ease through dark alleyways until she comes to a door. 
She knocks softly, her thin gloves barely muffling the sharp sound, and a sliding hatch opens on the wooden door.  A peculiarly coloured eye peaks out to look at her. 
                “Pass phrase?” Asks a high female voice, most likely belonging to the purple eyes.
                “It’s Jade.
Doors (Short Story)    Doors.
Trees crowd the old trail in front of me, dappling the ground with shadows. I laugh at myself as I trip, feeling completely free and happy out in the open.
Suddenly, a bright light flashes behind me, and I spin on my heel to face it. It flares brighter and I shut my eyes, flinging my arms over them in an attempt to block it out.
I open my eyes as my feet suddenly connect with hardwood, blinking as my eyes adjust to the dark area around me. The white spots left by the strange light fade away, and I am finally able to see the dark hallway I am now standing in. The hallway is filled with doors, each one of them different from the last. One door in particular catches my eye; it is a tall black door with a silver handle that seems to be casting a shadow slowly reaching towards me. I look up at the solitary oil lamp hanging from the ceiling and flickering and then flick my eyes back to the shadow, curious about how that co
